With a private retirement home having its licence revoked and its future unclear, concerns are being raised about residents of Park Street Place.

At their meeting Monday night, Chatham-Kent council discussed whether there is anything the municipality can do, as well what services the municipality is providing to residents of Park Street Place to help them transition to a safer environment.

Jodi Guilmette, Chatham-Kent’s general manager health and human services, said the municipality met with provincial authorities on Monday to get a better understanding what the next steps are for the residents. However, Guilmette said they have not received a lot of cooperation from the existing owner.

She said the number of residents who are impacted is approximately 25.

The Dresden retirement home has been ordered to either sell or shut down after a provincial regulator decided to revoke its licence, finding the home failed to provide proper care and is operating in a way that is “irresponsible” and “incompetent.”

In an order issued to Park Street Place in Dresden last month, the Retirement Homes Regulatory Authority (RHRA) stated that the home’s owner had until the end of January to determine whether they would sell the home to someone who would run the place as a retirement home, or stop operating as a retirement home.

Guilmette said while it’s not a municipal issue, they don’t want vulnerable residents to be left homeless at the closure.
