Supporting Women Who Are Victims of Abuse

Local groups that support women who are victims of abuse are getting a helping hand from the province.

In a news release, the government says it is investing $243,000 in nine rural agencies to improve access to quality care and services for those in rural and remote communities.

“No matter where you live in Southwestern Ontario, if you need help, it should be there for you,” said Monte McNaughton, MPP for Lambton-Kent-Middlesex.

$42,889 has been earmarked for the Chatham-Kent Women’s Centre, and $35,865 is going to Walpole Island First Nation.

Officials say women have faced additional challenges through the pandemic, including increased economic insecurity, greater burden of caregiving responsibilities, and a rise in the incidence of domestic violence and human trafficking.

“Someone’s location should not act as a barrier to access quality care and services,” said Jane McKenna, Associate Minister of Children and Women’s Issues. “We want to make sure that everyone affected by violence and exploitation receive the supports they need, no matter where they are in the province.”
