A local man had to dry his eyes in a holding cell after accidentally spraying himself with bear mace while attacking another man in Tilbury.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said officers were called to Young Street on Friday at around 3 p.m. after an argument between two men escalated into violence.

During the confrontation, one of the men pulled out a can of bear mace from his pocket and sprayed it directly into the victim’s face from close range. The victim retreated into his home while the attacker fell to the ground after the spray drifted into his own eyes.

Both men received care from CK EMS at the scene and were cleared.

A 54-year-old Tilbury man was arrested and is now charged with assault with a weapon and administering a noxious substance. He was held in custody for a bail hearing and later released with conditions and a future court date.
