Tax Late Payment Fees Up For Discussion Again

Chatham-Kent council will meet online tonight for a routine planning meeting.

The meeting will also include debating a recommendation from administration concerning the forgiveness of late payment charges on taxes for Chatham-Kent taxpayers.

Originally the recommendation just focused on waiving late payment charges for small businesses through July 31 of this year to help relieve the financial strain that many small businesses are going through due to provincial COVID-19 restrictions.

However at last week’s council meeting council decided it wanted more information from staff to revisit the recommendation and look at waiving late fees for all tax classes.

In a report to council, it’s estimated that by waiving late fees to all tax classes for the next four months it will result in a $200,000 loss to the municipality.
