Residents in Wheatley and Tilbury are one step closer to being able to drink their tap water again.

A boil water advisory, first issued on Monday, remains in effect.

However, municipal officials say pipe repairs have been finished and the first of two bacteria sampling results have come back clear.

Officials say a diesel-powered temporary pump was in operation for a few hours yesterday, pushing water in the distribution system and the elevated tank is nearly full.

Results from more test samples are expected by this afternoon.

The Chatham-Kent and Windsor-Essex Public Health Units are hoping to be able to lift the boil water advisory before the long weekend, however officials say if any samples come back with a fail, more tests will be required.
