Work continues around the site of recent underground gas leaks in downtown Wheatley.
The Municipality of Chatham-Kent said over the next few days, area residents should expect to see activity in the area around 35 Talbot Street West, near the Wheatley branch of the Chatham-Kent Public Library.
Contractors will be running gas tests on the monitoring well, along with gas migration tests around the library property. An air monitoring system and a temporary vent stack to capture any gas have already been installed on the property.
It is believed that the latest gas releases on June 26, July 1, and July 4 were caused by an abandoned water well behind the library. Operational plans are currently being developed to expose the well and close off the gas emissions.
The Wheatley library has been closed to the public since late June, however, library services will be relocating to The Village Resource Centre beginning on Saturday.
