Chatham-Kent Police are encouraging residents and business owners to join the Surveillance Camera Registry.
According to Crime Stoppers, a number of thefts have occurred at homes and businesses where thieves have been taking tools.
Officials say if a break and enter or major incident occurs, they can use surveillance footage from nearby registered cameras to gather information about the crime.
They say similar programs have been started across North American, and have been proved to be helpful in reducing crime.
Anyone who would like to register can visit the Chatham-Kent Police website.
