Despite some cold and rainy weather, organizers of this year’s Tampon Tuesday are hailing the event as a success.
On October 17, the United Way of Chatham-Kent and Women United collected a total of 1,650 period and hygiene products, which represents a retail value of $14,850.
An additional $1,419 in cash was collected through walk-up donations.
“Period products are the most requested but the least donated items at food banks,” Women United Chatham-Kent said in a Facebook post. “Period poverty is real – with menstrual hygiene products costing anywhere from $20-$30, many people are forced to make difficult choices each month.”
The proceeds raised during Tampon Tuesday will now be distributed to 25 community programs and agencies across Chatham-Kent to support girls and women in need.
