Thousands Raised at Sports Hall of Fame Tournament

The Wallaceburg Sports Hall of Fame is closing in on giving away almost a quarter million dollars to local charities, community groups, athletes and sporting organizations.

The sports hall of fame raises the money through its annual induction dinners as well as their annual golf tournament, which was held at Country View Golf Course this past Saturday.

Eighty golfers took part in the tournament, says Mike Griffith, who has been one of the driving forces in organizing the annual event for the past 22 years.

Griffith says the annual tournament raises about $6,000 a year, which goes back into the community.

Overall in 34 years, the hall of fame has donated over $235,000 through money they have raised.

Local athletes from the Wallaceburg area who have competed at provincial, national and even international competitions have benefited from donations from the sports hall of fame to help with their training and travel.

The 35th annual Wallaceburg sports hall of fame induction and awards ceremony is scheduled to be held on January 25 at the UAW Hall. This year’s inductees and annual award winners will be announced in November.
