With numbers of new positives piling up in Windsor Essex, Chatham-Kent is ending the practice of renting ice time to non-residents.
It was recommended by Dr. Colby earlier this week to end the practice of renting ice to residents of communities in the red zones or lockdown areas.
“We’ve talked at length about trying to respect public health orders and recommendations and guidelines so we reduce the transmission,” CAO Don Shropshire says. “Please, for goodness sake, these recommendations are put in place to make us safe, don’t try and find a way to get around them, find a way to respect them.”
Existing contracts will be honored but no other deals will be accepted until further notice.
Shropshire says there has always been a bit of cross-over, especially in border communities such as Tilbury and Wheatley.
“Obviously we’re trying to find a way to balance between respecting where the current registrations are taking place, but also not exposing our residents to additional risks.”
For any new bookings at this point Chatham-Kent residents may be asked for photo ID.
“Most organizations are conducting their own self-monitoring of the risks to ensure that those team members in yellow zones are not exposed to team members in the red or lock down zone,” says Jeff Bray, Director of Parks and Recreation. “This is a best practice that we encourage across the board for all ice users.”
