A new battery storage project coming to the town of Tilbury is expected to create dozens of local jobs while helping to meet the province’s growing energy demands.
The Ontario government has announced that power company Boralex has partnered with Walpole Island First Nation to begin pre-development work on the new Tilbury Battery Storage Project, which will provide reliable and affordable clean energy to families and businesses.
Construction on the battery storage project will begin construction north of Tilbury in Lakeshore later this year with completion estimated in late 2025. Once built, the facility is expected to store 80 megawatts of power, which is equivalent to powering 80,000 homes.
It is also anticipated that the project will create over 150 local jobs.
The project was selected by the Ontario Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) as part of its Expedited Long-Term Request for Proposals for storage capacity.
The IESO has indicated that the province will need at least 60 per cent more energy in the next 25 years to support the increasing demand.
