With the start of a new year, Chatham-Kent’s top doctor is extending three key wishes to local young people with the hope of fostering a healthier and safer future.
Acting Medical Officer of Health Dr. Shanker Nesathurai said first and foremost, he is urging the roughly 27,000 young people in Chatham-Kent to prioritize their health by getting vaccinated.
Secondly, he said it’s important that the municipality nurture environments that promote well-being.
“I encourage the design of neighbourhoods that inspire physical activity, recognizing the significant role that surroundings play in shaping overall health,” said Dr. Nesathurai in a news release. “By building environments that support well-being, we can enhance the quality of life for all residents.”
Lastly, Dr. Nesathurai said it’s important to encourage health literacy among young people to ensure they make informed decisions about their health.
“By fostering a community that values and supports health literacy, we can equip each young person with the tools to critically evaluate health advice sources and advocate for their own well-being,” he said.
Dr. Nesathurai assumed the role of medical officer of health in September 2023. He will serve in an “acting” role until his appointment is given approval from the Minister of Health.
