Police are urging everyone to do their homework before hiring a moving company to avoid falling victim to a new scam.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said officers received two reports of “moving scams” on May 13 and June 24 after the victims hired a company based out of Toronto.

In these incidents, the move began as expected, but hours later, the victims received a phone call saying they owed more money than what was initially agreed upon. The movers then threatened to not deliver the victim’s property if the additional payment was not received.

Police said these incidents are connected to ongoing police investigations in Toronto. Chatham-Kent police have since been collaborating with the Toronto Police Service to aid in the investigation.

The Toronto Police Service has released the following list of suspected fraudulent company names:

  • 12282569 Canada Inc.
  • O’Canada Movers
  • Roadway Moving and Storage Inc.
  • SafeBound Moving and Storage Inc.
  • Canadian Principal Movers
  • All You Can Move
  • Right on Track Moving
  • New Vision Moving
  • Greenway Moving

CK police said it is highly recommended that the public does the research before signing any agreement with a moving company.

Anyone who has been the victim of a scam is asked to contact police at 519-352-1234.
