As work to prevent future gas leaks winds down in Wheatley, trace amounts of methane have been detected.

Yesterday, a gas migration survey was done around the municipal parking lot with small amounts of methane detected near the APEC 3 well, which has already been capped. The team is now trying to collect enough gas for a sample for testing, which will determine next steps.

Officials say methane levels are extremely low, there is no H2S detected and there is no risk to the public or staff on site.

Residents are reminded that if at any time you detect the smell of gas, to immediately call 9-1-1.

In the meantime, the provincial contractor is demobilizing equipment at the site of the APEC 1 well.

On the municipal side of things, Fire Chief Chris Case will be taking over leadership of Chatham-Kent’s response in Wheatley. Former CAO Don Shropshire has stayed on to help, but is now stepping back to officially retire. Chief Case will be working with new municipal CAO Michael Duben, provincial officials, and local residents.
