Now that the bulk of construction on the Lord Selkirk Bridge is done, plans are in the works to remove the traffic lights at the corner of Murray and Reaume in Wallaceburg.
Director of Engineering and Transportation, Chris Thibert says while he knows it’s a contentious issues with area residents, the lights were only ever meant to be a temporary measure.
“They are scheduled to be removed and therefore the pedestrian signal that’s currently in place there will be reactivated,” Thibert says.
Thibert says there’s a bit of a reprieve though since the contractor still has some final work to be done on the bridge.
“He’s leaving the removal of the intersection lights at Murray and Reaume to the very very last thing that he does.”
It could be at least three to five weeks before any moves will be made.
That being said, while traffic studies have shown the lights aren’t warranted, Thibert says any decision to keep the lights in place would be up to municipal council.
