Police in Chatham-Kent have seized tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of cocaine after interrupting a possible parking lot drug deal.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said officers spotted an interaction between two people in a parking lot on Grand Avenue West in Chatham at around 8:15 p.m. on October 15, and attempted to speak with them.

However, when the officers approached, one of the individuals took off running while holding a bag. Police briefly chased the suspect after he attempted to discard the bag while evading officers.

Upon searching the bag, police seized 349 grams of cocaine with a street value of around $35,000. A digital scale and a large quantity of cash were also seized.

A 19-year-old Chatham man was later located and arrested. He is now charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, and three counts of failing to comply with a release order.

He was held in custody for a bail hearing.
