Chatham-Kent has been ranked as one of the top 10 Canadian cities for growth, according to a study by U-Haul that analyzes customer trends.

According to U-Haul’s Growth Index, CK is listed as Canada’s seventh highest growth city in 2023.

David Anstett, U-Haul’s president for Western Ontario, said he believes Chatham-Kent continues to attract new residents because of its affordability.

“For a long time, young people were moving west, but CK is turning around,” said Anstett in a news release. “CK has been called one of Canada’s fastest growing communities and the amount of incoming U-Haul trucks confirms that. The city offers a unique blend of rural and urban living, all at an affordable cost.”

However, the municipality dipped from last year’s first-place spot in U-Haul’s study, which analyzed one-way customer moves during the past year.

The statistics for last year also showed that people arriving in Chatham fell 10 per cent from 2022, while departures from Chatham also fell nearly 10 per cent.

U-Haul’s Growth Index also showed that do-it-yourself movers accounted for 56.5 per cent of all one-way rental truck traffic in and out of the market.

Calgary was ranked the number one growth city for 2023. Sherbrooke, Edmonton, Kelowna and Courtenay round out the top five, respectively. Ontario was ranked the 10th highest province for growth in Canada.
