The Chatham-Kent chapter of the United Way is celebrating a major milestone in the community.

This year the United Way of Chatham-Kent is marking 75 years of service since the organization was established in 1948.

Karen Green, United Way CK’s marketing and communications manager, said an appreciation event is already being planned for this summer to thank the community for its generosity. Other special announcements will also be made throughout the year.

“We would never have been able to do this work for so long without the support and partnership of the community,” she said. “We want to really celebrate our community this year.”

The formation of the United Way CK is credited to passionate volunteers from the Chamber of Commerce and Labour Council. The organization’s first campaign was chaired by Sydney Amherst Morse, who was at that time the president and general manager of Union Gas.

“We’ve come a long way since that first campaign in 1948 raised a little over $50,000, and we are so grateful that we get to continue to do this work in our community,” said Green.

Since 1948, the United Way of Chatham-Kent has raised more than $65 million to support hundreds of local nonprofits and organizations.
