The local chapter of the United Way is launching a lawsuit against a former employee for “alleged misappropriation of funds.”
United Way Chatham-Kent announced on Monday that a civil claim and a police investigation are both underway.
“The Board and Executive Team takes this matter very seriously and wants to ensure transparency with our many supporters about these allegations,” the United Way said in a statement.
Officials with the organization said they will not comment on the identity of the former employee or the specifics of the case while the Chatham-Kent Police Service is investigating.
However, officials thanked former CEO Barb Palace, who is credited for identifying the issue and assisting with an internal investigation, which resulted in the case being brought to the attention of local police.
Palace abruptly tendered her resignation as CEO in September after only two years in the role. No explanation for her departure was provided.
“We deeply appreciate the trust and support of our donors during this time and want to assure them that we are working tirelessly to resolve this situation,” said interim CEO Maureen Geddes
The United Way added that an internal audit has taken place and steps have been taken to strengthen security protocols to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
