UPDATE: Armed Suspect Tased Following Wallaceburg Standoff

Additional details have been released following a lengthy police standoff in Wallaceburg that ended with one man in hospital.

Officers with the Chatham-Kent Police Service were called to a Wallace Street residence at around 2 a.m. on Saturday after receiving reports of a man threatening others with a weapon.

When police arrived, the man barricaded himself inside the home, but everyone else was able to get out safely. Officers secured the area, and the CK police Emergency Response Team was called in to negotiate with the suspect, who was believed to be in possession of knives.

Following a 13-hour standoff, officers with the Emergency Response Team entered the home and the 65-year-old suspect began harming himself with a knife. Three officers discharged their conducted energy weapons to take him into custody.

The man was taken to the hospital for medical treatment, however, his the severity of his injuries has not been disclosed.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is now looking into the incident. The police oversight agency has assigned two investigators and two forensic investigators to the case.

The SIU is a civilian law enforcement agency in Ontario that investigates any incident involving police that has resulted in death, serious injury, the discharge of a firearm, or allegations of sexual assault.
