Local residents will be seeing increased activity at the site of the Wheatley explosion in the coming weeks as upgrades are made to existing gas monitoring equipment.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent said work crews will be attending the site in downtown Wheatley to install monitoring equipment and a new scrubber system designed to trap gas emissions.

The upgrade will provide continued safety for residents and also allow all of the equipment to be located in the former municipal parking lot.

The existing water-gas separator and scrubber system will be removed once the new equipment has been tested.

Contractors will also be onsite conducting a follow-up gas migration survey.

The explosion on August 26, 2021, which destroyed two buildings and injured 20 people, was caused by the release of methane hydrogen sulphide.

Any resident is urged to immediately call 911 if they smell gas.
