It shouldn’t be too much longer before local residents in their early 60s can get vaccinated against COVID-19 at their local pharmacy or family doctor’s office.

Chief Medical Officer Dr. David Colby says they’re just waiting for delivery of the AstraZeneca drug.

“The AstraZeneca vaccine, which is a vaccine that only requires refrigeration not freezing, makes that ideal for distribution through normal vaccine channels that we would have, like doctor’s offices and pharmacies.”

A pilot project at pharmacies began late last week in Windsor-Essex, the GTA, and Kingston. Dr. Colby says it will be expanding to more regions this week using a special tracking system on the COVAX network.

“Part of that rollout means that pharmacies have to be trained in how to enter that kind of data,” Dr. Colby says. “I very much look forward to this happening in Chatham-Kent because the more people we get vaccinated, the better all of us will be.”

Dr. Colby says the expanded roll-out for those aged 60-64 will include doctor’s offices and other primary care clinics before long as well.
