Chatham-Kent Police continue to investigate after an eastbound VIA Rail train struck a vehicle in Chatham.
The collision took place shortly after 3 o’clock Sunday afternoon at the Keil Drive crossing just north of Park Avenue West.
Authorities say one person in the vehicle suffered critical injuries and was taken to hospital.
Phil Homerski was a passenger on the train and says it all happened so fast.
“We had just had the announcement that we were 10 minutes out from Chatham when shortly after the train started to slow and we felt a jarring sensation and heard a thud, then the train slowed down completely to a stop.”
Homerski says he was impressed with the train staff and first responders in their quick response to the situation.
“I think the VIA Rail staff on board really did handle the situation to the best of their ability, I think they did a good job of maintaining calm and keeping passengers as updated as they possible could,” Homerski says. ”
The train was held at the scene for just over four hours before resuming the journey towards London.
We’ll have more information as it becomes available.
