Waiting for the All-Clear in Wheatley

The municipality is in talks with the province to try to get to the bottom of a mysterious gas leak in Wheatley.

An Erie Street business owner called for help after discovering the gas leak on June 2nd, but Chatham-Kent CAO Don Shropshire says while no hydrogen sulphide has been detected since June 4th, they’re still trying to get to a point where the all-clear can be sounded.

“We’re looking at what we can do to get things back to normal in the absence of any gas readings,” Shropshire says. “We’ve been trying to work with the provincial government and a number of private sector companies, and there’s no definitive answer yet.”

27 people were evacuated when the gas was first discovered and 10 businesses in the area have been affected.

“We recognize (in) the community of Wheatley, there’s a whole bunch of folks that have been displaced and we’ve got to be addressing those concerns as well,” Shropshire says.

There has been at least one officer and three fire fighters at the scene 24 hours a day since the initial 9-1-1 call, with a command unit and pumping appliance to monitor for any more gas and respond to any fires that might break out.
