Wallaceburg Among Ontario Communities Holding ‘Fight Ford’ Protests

Area residents will be taking to the streets of Wallaceburg this weekend to protest the Ontario government.

Organized by the local group Dresden Citizens Against Reckless Environmental Disposal (Dresden C.A.R.E.D.), the protest will be held on Saturday on McNaughton Avenue, in front of MPP Steve Pinsonneault’s constituency office.

The rally will be one of dozens held province-wide to oppose the Ford government’s policies impacting healthcare privatization, education, and reduced transparency. Similar protests were also held in late March.

Dresden C.A.R.E.D. Chairperson Robert Simpson said local residents are also adamantly opposed to the provincial government’s legislation that will allow a Mississauga-based company to reopen a dormant landfill near Dresden.

“I don’t know how much louder we need to shout, but we’re going to stop that dump because we have to protect Dresden, we have to protect the Sydenham River,” said Simpson. “Bill 5 has gutted environmental laws [and] it’s taking control away from municipalities.”

Simpson also pointed to recently passed legislation that exempts Ford, his cabinet, and their staff from Freedom of Information Act requests.

“It’s just a massive amount of overreach by this current government. We have to stop it, as the people,” he said.

The protest on Saturday will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
