Councillor Carmen McGregor being sworn in to office, December 3, 2018.

Tonight marks the first meeting of Chatham-Kent’s new council with a number of new faces sitting around the big table.

Aaron Hall joins Carmen McGregor in representing Wallaceburg in Council Chambers.

On Friday, the two met with constituents at a local coffee shop, something they hope to continue over the course of the term.

“We plan to do this before each of our council meetings, or maybe we just need to do it every Friday just so we can get out and talk to people,” McGregor says.

“The whole point is to discuss the different agenda items that are coming up,” Hall says. “I think it’s so important to engage the community.”

McGregor is entering her second term representing Ward Five, and says she looks forward to taking on a mentorship role for Hall, as former Councillor Jeff Wesley did for her.

“I remember four years ago going in and going through these agendas for the first time, Getting zoning reports and building reports and all these things I wasn’t familiar with,” she says. “Now I know how to understand them, how to read them, and I’m so happy to have another partner that wants to work together so this time I can share with him some of that background knowledge.”

There are a number of items on the agenda, including live streaming of meetings, an update on the Hometown Hockey events coming up this week, and a motion from McGregor to allow the United Way access to municipal staff to provide information on this year’s campaign.
