Chatham-Kent’s Mayor is describing the Wallaceburg crosswalk issue as a ‘fiasco’.
Area residents are continuing to gather at the corner of Murray and Reaume every morning and afternoon to help kids navigate the pedestrian crosswalk safely.
Hope says the handling of the situation wasn’t ideal, but safety is key.
“We started out with crossing guards at about an $86,000 expenditure, council approved up to half a million dollars for crosswalk signs,” Hope says. “It seems like we just keep changing and keep changing and keep changing, this seems like it’s been a fiasco.”
Hope says photo radar is something he still wants to look at, as a deterrent mechanism.
“Is a stop light going to slow people down, is a stoplight going to get people to pay attention? I think it’s like anything else, when people get a ticket they start to pay a little different attention.”
At this point, there is no set timeline for getting a pedestrian-activated stop light installed at the corner of Murray and Reaume.
