With as many as 500 local families making use of the Salvation Army food bank in Wallaceburg each month, officials are putting out a call for help.
“With the cost of apartments in Chatham-Kent continuing to rise, the cost of hydro continuing to rise, and the cost of food going up, something’s got to give,” says Captain Stephanie Watkinson. “Most people’s income is not going up at the rate of everything else, so something suffers and it’s always the food budget.”
Today marks the official kick-off of the “Every Plate Full” campaign in Wallaceburg, with a barbecue at the Salvation Army on Lowe Avenue from 12-1pm.
Watkinson says they get great support later in the summer with donations of fresh fruits and vegetables from area farmers and gardeners, but donations tend to be slow in June and July.
Among the most needed items right now are non-perishable food items like pasta, juice boxes, and snacks for kids.
