Chatham-Kent council has approved a draft plan for a new subdivision in Wallaceburg.
The proposed development from Trident Builders will be built on the former W.T. Laing public school property. The land has been vacant for over 20 years. The school closed in 2001 and the school was demolished in 2010.
Wallaceburg councillor Aaron Hall said the development will help ease a housing gap in Wallaceburg.
“Chatham-Kent has seen a lot of growth and had a lot of good momentum going on, …and this is great news for Wallaceburg to get in on that momentum,” Hall said.
He added that the new subdivision won’t answer all of Wallaceburg’s housing needs, but it’s a good start.
One phase of the development will see the construction of 16 semi-detached dwellings.
Another phase, which will front on Elgin Street, proposes the construction of four townhouse dwellings containing a total of 24 units.
Due to infrastructure improvements needed, the townhouse phase is expected to start construction in the spring of 2023, while the semi-detached homes will likely start construction in 2024.
