A number of celebrations are being held in the area to mark National Indigenous Peoples Day.
A summer reading program kicked off this morning at the Bkejwanong First Nation Public Library this morning and it’s the first of it’s kind in Canada.
Linda-Lou Classens says getting the chance to read the language is a special thing.
“We’re historically very underfunded, we do a lot with very little, and so that’s what we’re doing today,” says Classens. “We wanted to get together with Libraries and Archives Canada and the National Creative Committee said why don’t we do a launch in a native community, and I said, ‘Perfect! I would love to do one!'”
Meantime, an Aboriginal Day and summer solstice celebration is being held this afternoon in Highbanks Park with activates, including a mini pow wow, and fireworks tonight.
