The bridge checkpoint at Walpole Island will remain in place for at least another month as council has voted to extend the ban on non-residents visiting the island.

Walpole Island First Nation council made the decision pm July 28th to extend the checkpoint as part of their efforts to keep COVID-19 from spreading.

This came a day after a community member tested positive for the virus.

The new positive case brings the community’s total to 15, including one death.

The checkpoint has been in place since April 1st, and there had not been an active case on the island since June 5th.

Council will revisit the matter again in a month.
