The Walpole Island Fire Department is getting a boost in training and public education resources to help keep the community safe.

Enbridge Gas Ontario has named Walpole Island First Nation as one of six Indigenous recipient communities across the province to receive a $5,000 grant through its Safe Community Project Assist program.

The funding will allow local firefighters to purchase specialized training materials as well as fire prevention and safety awareness resources for community outreach.

Announced at the Indigenous Partnership Summit in Toronto, the grant is part of a broader Enbridge initiative supporting 13 Indigenous fire departments across Ontario this year through training grants and smoke and carbon monoxide alarm donations.

Kettle and Stony Point First Nation also received support through the Safe Community Project Assist.

“At Enbridge Gas Ontario, safety is at the heart of everything we do,” said Jennifer Burnham, President, Enbridge Gas Ontario in a news release. “Through Safe Community Project Zero and Safe Community Project Assist, we’re proud to support Indigenous fire departments that play a critical role in protecting their communities. These investments help provide life-saving equipment, training opportunities and public education resources that strengthen community resilience and help keep people safe.”

Launched in 2012, the program has provided more than 400 grants to fire departments across the province through nearly $2.1 million in funding from Enbridge Gas Ontario.
