Residents on Walpole Island First Nation are being encouraged to conserve water.
Officials say due to yesterday’s crude oil spill from the Suncor refinery on St Clair Parkway, residents in the First Nations community are asked to use water sparingly until further notice.
Yesterday, the Band Council said the island’s tap water was safe as the intake from the river had been closed and the community was relying off supply from the water tower.
Chatham-Kent PUC staff have closed the intake for the Wallaceburg water treatment plant as a precaution as monitoring of the river continues.
Municipal officials say Chatham-Kent’s tap water remains 100% safe, and pending any further instruction from the Ontario Ministry of Environment, Conservation, and Parks, the intake could be reopened by 6 o’clock tonight.
