Municipal officials are digging deeper into the results of last month’s election.
Turnout for the October 24th vote was at its lowest since amalgamation with only 30% of eligible voters opting to cast a ballot.
A ward-by-ward breakdown has now been released.
Not surprisingly with its two incumbent councillors running uncontested, Ward 5 Wallaceburg saw the lowest turnout across Chatham-Kent, with just 16.8% voter turnout. That compares to 46.59% in 2018. The highest turnout this time around was in Ward 2 South Kent at 36.11%. Four years ago, South Kent residents also had the highest turnout at 48.81%.
More residents in Ward 6 took advantage of advance polls, while Ward 2 residents had the highest online voting percentage.
Low voter turnout was not isolated to Chatham-Kent during this year’s municipal election. Political watchers point to voter fatigue, lack of engagement, and lack of competitive races as some of the primary suspects.
