Water Wells First is putting more pressure on the provincial government to act on behalf of rural residents in the former Dover Township when it comes to a potential link between wind turbine construction and contaminated well water. water-wells-meeting-jan-11

A public meeting was held at Country View Golf Course Wednesday night, handing out form letters for area residents to send to Queen’s Park asking the government to intervene in the North Kent Wind 1 project before construction begins, possibly threatening local groundwater.

Chatham-Kent-Leamington MPP Rick Nicholls was one of nearly 200 people in attendance last night and says the issue has struck a chord with him.

“I witnessed the black sludge first hand at a farm in Dover the other day and I was actually appalled at what I found,” Nicholls says. “For the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change to ignore the concerns that this community has is unrealistic and unethical.”

Nicholls raised the issue at Queen’s Park before the winter break and so far says he’s had no feedback.

He will be taking another petition signed by those at last night’s meeting back with him when the Legislature resumes next month.

Water Wells First frontman Kevin Jakubec repeatedly criticized Chatham-Kent officials for not denying permits to wind companies until the water issues have been resolved, something the municipality’s legal team has said is beyond their power.
