Pond plants may be pretty in your backyard, but they don’t belong in local waterways.
A large patch of water lettuce was recently found in the McGregor Creek.
Officials with the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority say while it may be popular in household ponds and water gardens, it is an invasive species and can cause ecological damage, block water flow, and choke off native plant species.
Last week, the LTVCA’s species at risk and field crew and a wetland restoration technician travelled down the creek by canoe, filling nine garbage bags with the plants.
The water lettuce was then burned offsite to prevent any further spread.
