The rehabilitation of the Wheatley Water Treatment Plant has hit another snag.
During a CK Public Utilities Commission (PUC) meeting last week, General Manager Darren Galbraith said the Wheatley plant is still on track to reopen in November, however, it will likely be closer to the end of the month due to newly damaged equipment.
Galbraith said the PUC will need to replace the facility’s diffusers, which are devices used in water treatment to introduce oxygen into the water to support the aerobic digestion of organic pollutants.
While the treatment plant was initially expected to be up and running at the end of August, the rehabilitation has faced multiple delays over the past several months due to the scope and size of the project.
The Wheatley Water Treatment Plant has been shut down since a fire in September 2023, which caused extensive damage to the facility.
For more than a year, water demands for Wheatley and Tilbury have been served by a mobile temporary water treatment system. Galbraith said the PUC will be keeping that system online until the end of November as a precaution.
