Samples of contaminated well water from homes in North Kent. February, 2018.

Chatham-Kent councillor Rhonda Jubenville is bringing in a motion to have the municipality ask the province to conduct more health hazard testing on water wells in the former Dover Township.

The Ministry of Health conducted health hazard testing on water wells last year, but many residents feel that the province did not investigate the possibility of toxic sediment in the water wells due to the construction of nearby wind turbines.

The province’s report, released in April, 2022, indicated that there was a significant deterioration in general well water quality within the study area between 2017 and 2021. A total of 61 wells were tested as part of the investigation.

According to the report, no widespread health risks were identified during the investigation, however, Jakubec said the report does not provide a definitive answer and instead cites the need for further assessment and investigation.

Jubenville’s motion also proposes requesting the province to proceed with the completion of specific health hazard testing.
