Lake Erie will be in the social media spotlight next week as part of an annual awareness campaign.
On August 16, social media users are invited to share their photos and love for Lake Erie to help start a rally and call for action to protect the lake.
Western Lake Erie continues to be hit by algae blooms, which can be toxic, affecting drinking water and complex ecosystems.
The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released its 2023 Lake Erie algae bloom forecast earlier this year. While a summer bloom was initially forecast to be mild, heavy July rainfall and record-high temperatures have grown the algae to the moderate range, and officials say the bloom could still grow in severity before the end of the season.
The awareness campaign, using the hashtag #WeAreLakeErie was launched in 2017 by three Canadian environmental groups, Environmental Defence Canada, Canadian Freshwater Alliance, and Freshwater Future Canada.
