A Chatham man is facing weapons charges following a standoff with police.

Chatham-Kent Police responded to a residential panic alarm at a McNaughton Avenue East home shortly after 1 o’clock Wednesday afternoon.

Officers then found a man inside brandishing a shotgun. In the interest of public safety, officers took cover and secured the surrounding area.

After several hours of negotiation, the man surrendered the firearm and was taken into custody.

Further investigation showed the man was under the influence of an illicit substance, leading him to hallucinate and believe there was someone else in the home who wanted to hurt him.

The 55-year-old has since been charged with careless storage of firearm and possession of a firearm at an unauthorized place. He was released with conditions and an October court date.
