Highgate’s Mary Webb Centre is looking for a municipal loan to help fund their renovations, but some Chatham-Kent Councillors are hesitant.
Councillor David VanDamme asked council to set up an interest-free five year bridge loan to help the centre complete renovations this summer.
A report will come back to Council about the terms of this possible loan, but Councillor Derek Robertson says the Municipality isn’t in the business of lending.
“We’re not a bank, but it appears we may be planning to hang the “bank of Chatham-Kent” sign up first thing tomorrow morning,” Robertson quips. “The one time when we did conduct bridge financing, I asked for a policy on the matter and we haven’t received that policy, don’t know why we’re going ahead with this now.”
Once a policy has been put in place to outline the details of potential loan repayments, the Mary Webb issue will be back before council, likely next month.
