Damage is pegged at $300,000 following a house fire in Chatham.

Crews from Stations 1 and 2 were called to the West Street property around 2:15 Monday afternoon, where they found heavy smoke billowing from all sides of the roof.

Officials say two occupants were doing renovations on the home when the blaze broke out, but were able to escape safely.

In all, 19 fire fighters battled the blaze with EMS and CK Police on scene as well.

Homes on either side of the building were evacuated, but everyone was able to return safely a short time later.

The fire was deemed accidental as a result of the construction work being done.
