Wheatley Man Charged After Abused Dog Dies

A Wheatley man is facing charges following the death of an abused dog.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service received an animal cruelty complaint on Thursday at around 12:30 p.m. that led officers to a Cemetery Road address in Wheatley, where they found a severely injured dog. Authorities also found evidence of neglect and abuse.

The dog was provided immediate medical care, however, it later succumbed to its injuries.

Animal Welfare Services was contacted to attend the scene and assist with a joint investigation.

As a result, a 43-year-old Wheatley man was arrested and charged with one count of cruelty to animals causing unnecessary pain, suffering or injury. He was later released with conditions and a future court date.

Animal Welfare Services will also be pursuing additional charges under provincial legislation in relation to several other farm animals located on the property.
