More kids will be able to enjoy summer camp this year, thanks to the YMCA of Southwestern Ontario.

The organization’s Fill the Bus campaign is underway with a goal of raising $100,000. So far, enough money has been donated to support sending 445 kids to camp. A $10,000 donation from Mainstreet Credit Union is sponsoring 67 campers.

The YMCA offers day and overnight camp experiences to children and youth regardless of the barriers they might face. Through donations the charity hopes to make camping the same experience for future generations.

“Camp is an educational and magical experience. We truly believe that spending time away at camp equips kids with skills and confidence that they will take with them through to adulthood. We appreciate that the cost of camp is more challenging for some, and our Fill the Bus campaign raises funds to ensure every child can attend camp, regardless of their financial circumstances,” said Andrew Lockie, CEO of YMCA of Southwestern Ontario, who was also an avid camper in his youth.

Officials say children and youth who attend camp report increased environmental awareness, positive attitudes towards physical activity, emotional intelligence, personal development and self-confidence.

There are two YMCA overnight camps in Southwestern Ontario – Camp Henry in Point Pelee National Park and Camp Queen Elizabeth on the shores of Beausoleil Island in Georgian Bay National Park.
